When you’re living with an injury, illness, or disability, your day to day can differ from your peers. There may be things, such as physical tasks, that you require assistance or slight accommodations for, in order to perform self care or other important tasks for your well Ibeing. But over the years, many people who live with injury, illness, or disability, have gone on to live meaningful and fulfilled lives. Individuals such as Stephen Hawking, Nick Vujicic, and Frida Kahlo, all lived with disabilities and yet have gone on to become exemplary people in their chosen fields, inspiring many others to reach for their dreams and become more involved within their own communities.

Living with an injury, illness, or disability, it can be difficult to see how you too can get what you want and live life to the fullest.

It can be all too easy to limit yourself, but it’s important to know that putting yourself out there won’t just give you the opportunity to make a difference in your community, but it’ll also benefit you, too!

Below, we look at  5 great benefits of getting a job.

  1. Financial Independence

It may sound simple, but being employed can go a long way in ensuring you are on top of your finances. Not only will you be able to provide for yourself, you’ll also be able to afford a better quality of life, take better care of people who may depend on you, and have better access to health professionals, too.

  1. Continuous Development

We all crave stimulation. It gets boring doing the same routine, day in and out, and if you’re stuck at home because of an injury, illness, or disability, it can really drag you down. Finding employment can help you develop skills and knowledge that you didn’t even know you were capable of, boosting your self-esteem and mental well being too.

  1. Socialisation

Having a job opens you up to meeting new people. Humans are very social beings, and we all thrive on being around others. You’ll find that it’s easy to meet new faces, and develop strong friendships, that can not only make every day an adventure, but can also be a great source of support if you are having issues with your injury, illness, or disability.

  1. Emotional Wellbeing

No matter your injury, illness, or disability, it can be difficult on the day-to-day to deal with the effects of your situation. Having a job not only gives you the opportunity to contribute to your community, it also shifts your focus into a more positive perspective. You’ll see  just how capable you are by what you can get done, and you’ll find that this sense of accomplishment can go a long way in better emotional wellbeing.

  1. Purpose

It can be easy to let your injury, illness, or disability become the forefront of your identity. But like you, we know that’s not all that there is to you! Being employed can help you find a sense of purpose, and you’ll find that having a job can actually be very fulfilling, making you happier and more confident in your own skills.
