7 Common Mistakes You Should Avoid When Buying Home Security Cameras

Let’s face it, buying a DIY security camera involves a lot of know-how. You need to choose the right brand, compare prices, and choose the right specs. There is nothing wrong with doing some research. After all, it is about the safety and well-being of your family. Right choice is vivint doorbell camera when it is about the security of the family.

If you are looking for the best home security system, you should avoid the following mistakes. Keep things simple and find a security system that works round-the-clock,and is well-built and affordable.

1.      Going for Price over Quality

We are always tempted by cheap products. When it comes to the security of your family and property, the budget shouldn’t be the only factor. Usually, cheap cameras deliver poor quality results and they are not well-built. They may open vulnerabilities and compromise home security. They may be helpful for the hackers as backdoors as they can easily be linked to unknown servers.

Therefore, you should choose security cameras only from known brands and don’t compromise on the features you need when looking for DIY security cameras.

2.      Choosing a camera that completely depends on the cloud network

Most brands sell cloud cameras by cutting down on the features. These cameras can easily undermine your home security. They depend entirely on the active connection to the company’s cloud network. They don’t come with local storage. In case the server is down or the intruder takes down the internet, there is no storage space to record the footage which is triggered by detecting motion. Hence, it is completely useless.

Cameras with local recording backup are even better than those cameras. At least, they have a storage space to hold the footage temporarily if the cloud server is down.

Refrain from buying security cameras that are compromised when the server is down.

3.      Opting for Cloud Recording by Paying a Monthly Subscription

Over the years, the purchasing power of the average consumer has drastically increased thanks to easy credit plans. People usually prefer paying a lower amount of money while buying and then every month in installments rather than paying the whole amount in a lump sum.

Buying cloud-dependent security cameras without any local storage and RTSP or ONVIP support is one of the common examples. Though they cost less upfront, you also have to opt for a cloud recording plan that is charged per month. Also, keep in mind that the prices increase on a regular basis.

Hence, you should avoid cameras that ask you for a monthly plan. Instead, look for the cameras that are completely yours once you buy them.

4.      Investing in Wi-Fi Cameras Only

Well, this is a big mistake. Going wireless is the latest trend considering the convenience that comes with it. One thing many people don’t know is that it's not completely reliable.  When it comes to browsing the web, you can easily rely on the Wi-Fi network. But when it comes to round-the-clock data transfer at a specific range, it's not reliable.

Unless you live in a house where you can’t run cables across the rooms, it is always great to use wired cameras. You should cover the critical points with a wired camera. If you opt for a Wi-Fi camera, make sure it has on-board storage in case the network fails.

5.      Choosing a Low-Resolution Camera

You shouldn’t buy anything lower than 1080p full HD when it comes to security cameras. Resolution lower than 1080p can give you poor quality images and you won’t be able to identify faces. Hence, no one asks for 720p cameras these days. It would be even better if you opt for the higher side.

6.      Ignoring Night Vision

These days, you cannot find an IP camera without night vision. But you should consider the range of IR LEDs and brightness. Don’t choose the cheap ring-type LEDs combined with dozens of mini IR LED bulbs arranged in a ring covering the lens.

Choose better quality EXIR LEDs. Of course, these are lower in numbers. But they are the way brighter without any flashlight effect. Ensure that the camera records no false color in the daytime.

7.      Not Having Enough Cameras for Premises

Most people have cameras only in common areas of their homes. Instead, they should consider every point where someone can enter their property. Also, cover the fences or perimeter walls to spot intruders.

Conclusion

With some research and preparation, you can choose the best security camera for your home. When investing in a security system, avoid these common mistakes to get the best value for your money.
