Basics of a Sump Pump

Damage caused by water is not only inconvenient but also very expensive to repair. However, one can easily prevent any water damage by simply investing in a sump pump.

In this sump pump zone guide, we will provide you all the basics of a sump pump. We will talk about the functioning and the types of pumps available, so you can choose one according to your needs.

What is a Sump Pump?

A sump pump is generally used in the basement to keep the area dry. It is usually placed in a well-constructed sump pit. From there, it removes the water that gets collected in the sump pit by pumping it out through the pipe.

How does it work?

Whenever there’s a rise in the water level of the sump basin, the float switch of the sump pump gets triggered, which further activates the pump. Most sump pumps operate using a centrifugal pump with an impeller to stir water within the basin. The impeller functions to push water out of the sump basin through the discharge pipe. As the water goes out, more water enters the newly created void. And the impeller once again starts pushing the water. The whole process continues till there’s no water left in the basin. The discharge pipe has a check valve that blocks the backflow of water. It’s to ensure that the water completely leaves the sump pit.Whenever there’s a power cut or the main pump fails to operate, the backup pump activates by drawing power from the battery

Different Types of Sump Pump.

There are several types of sump pump available in the market. Some of the main types are-

  • Primary Sump Pumps.

These are the main sump pumps used in most houses and businesses to drain water from the pits. In the market, you can find two different types of primary pumps.

Submersible pumps: These pumps are completely submerged in the water of the sump basins. It helps in avoiding the overheating of the pump so that it can function for a long time.

Pedestal pumps: In these pumps, the motor is fixed on a long tube above the sump basin to prevent any water damage. For smaller pits that can’t fit a submersible pump, pedestal pumps are the best choice.

  • Backup Sump Pumps.

Are you looking for additional protection just in case your primary pump stops functioning? If yes, then consider investing in a backup pump.

Whenever there’s a power cut or the main pump fails to operate, the backup pump activates by drawing power from the battery (DC).

  • Combination Sump Pumps.

These are systems that include both a primary pump and a battery backup pump. When it comes to functioning, they work on a similar principle as the backup pump.

Conclusion

Now that you know about the functioning of the sump pump and its different types, you can easily choose the right one for your house. So what are you waiting for? Instead of spending a good fortune on repairing the damage caused by water, invest in a good sump pump today!
