During the first four weeks, the results were the same. Both groups have shown improvements. However, it was during the second phase of the trial (from four to eight weeks) where the curcumin group made huge strides. Researchers concluded that curcumin could be a safe way to improve the condition of patients with major depressive disorder due to its antioxidant properties.

 

The findings are consistent with another study, which concluded that the body’s immune system might contribute to mental disorders. For instance, people with depression are found to have higher oxidative stress and inflammation in their systems. The high levels of inflammation produce cytokines, which then find their way into the brain and affect dopamine, glutamate, and serotonin, the neurotransmitters linked to the onset of depression. The anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidation properties of curcumin will help address this.
