Wood is comparatively softer than other materials used in the wall. So it would be best if you had any drill or use of a hammer on the wood. Just mark the position using the pencil. Then make sure that the screw is strong enough, and then press the wooden screw against the wall and screw it. Make sure to leave some parts outside so that you can hang the clock.
