How to Delay Microsoft’s Windows 10 May Update

Delay installation of feature updates

In case the feature update is geared up for installation, you can postpone it for around seven days. Here’s what you need to do.

  1. Launch the Settings app.
  2. Select Update and Security from the screen.
  3. Now, go to Windows Updates.
  4. Hit the option called Schedule the restart.
  5. Now turn on Schedule a time.
  6. Select a time.
  7. After that, select a day.
  8. Now, your computer shall not reboot automatically for changing the present setup until the scheduled date or time arrives.

Pause the download of feature updates

For delaying the installation of new Windows 10 updates for a number of days, here’s what you need to do.

  1. Launch the Settings app.
  2. Now, click Update and Security.
  3. Select the option for Windows Update.
  4. Go to Advanced options.
  5. Turn on Pause Updates option.

Now your device shall not get the feature as well as quality updates via Windows Update for a maximum of thirty-five days.

Deferring Windows 10 May 2019 Update

Windows 10 Pro users who are not willing to get the new updates can defer the feature updates from the Settings app. The May 2019 updates can be deferred for up to eighteen months. Here are the steps for deferring Windows  10 May 2019 update:

  1. Click on the Settings app.
  2. Select Update and Security from the list.
  3. Now, select Windows Update.
  4. Head over to Advanced options.
  5. Move to the Choose when updates are installed segment.
  6. If you set the level to Semi-Annual Channel(targeted), then the updates will get deferred to a year after their original release date.
  7. If you set the level to the semi-annual channel, then the updates will get deferred to a year after they release to organizations.
  8. From the pull-down, you can select how many days you want to defer the update for.

Blocking Windows 10 May 2019 Update

If you are a Windows 10 Home user, then you cannot defer the updates from the Settings. However, the updates can be blocked and prevented from getting installed automatically via a metered connection.

  1. Launch the Settings app.
  2. Open Network and Internet.
  3. Select either Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
  4. Choose the network that is connected to the net.
  5. Enable the switch below set as metered connection.
  6. Go back to the previous screen.
  7. Select the Home option from the left pane.
  8. Choose Update and Security.
  9. Select Windows Update.
  10. Go to Advanced options.
  11. Disable the option for automatically downloading updates over a metered connection.
