SECOND-HAND ELECTRONICS BUYING GUIDE

There comes a time when we need a new phone, microwave, fridge, or music system but have financial constraints. It is at such a time that we are in the market for second-hand electronic appliances.

Purchasing used items is something that several people are resistant to, oblivious to the fact that it is a money-saving venture. It is also environmentally friendly as it minimizes the number of scrap metals lying on landfills somewhere.

While second-hand appliances have their advantages, they also have some drawbacks. For starters, you are not sure if the appliance has underlying issues. To minimize the chances of purchasing faulty used electronic appliances, consider the tips below.

  • Look for damage signs.

Second-hand appliances are prone to damage. The fact that the casing is shiny does not mean that the appliance is fully functional. It may have underlying issues that may require repairs. For starters, look at the code and examine it for bite marks and bending. Also, check the ports for any signs of burning.

It is also advisable to switch on the machine and look/listen to any unusual sounds or activities.

If you are not well conversant with how electronic appliances work, get a handyman or someone with a greater understanding of electronics to look at the item. In case of any damages that need repair, seek the services of an appliance repair professional.

  • Test it

Never purchase a used appliance if no proper tests have been carried out. Always insist on plugging the machine and testing it.

Some sellers will only vouch for their products. Never mix emotions with business and do not purchase the appliance until you are sure that it works.

Another method is to ask for a ‘grace period’ to ensure the item is in top-notch condition. That way, you get at least a week to see how efficient the appliance is. First, come to an agreement with the seller that if the item does not meet your expectations, you receive all or part of the deposit placed.

  • Cost of the item

The reason why most people opt for used items is to save a few extra bucks. So, what if the pricing is unreasonable?

By unreasonable, I mean the item is either very expensive or very cheap. Second-hand appliances should never cost the same as new items due to factors such as warranty, as well as wear and tear. On the other hand, a very cheap appliance raises eyebrows. It is either the item is of a very low –quality or faulty. Besides, the last thing you want is to end up with a stolen appliance.

  • Compatibility

It is vital to buy an appliance that is compatible with the other gadgets that are used in conjunction with it. That way, you minimize expenses incurred from purchasing additional products for use with the appliance.

  • Location of the seller

If you are purchasing from an individual, knowing their geographical location is imperative. Some sellers are far, and the buyer incurs additional shipping costs. Furthermore, if a seller is near, the better because you can test the product before making a purchase.
