Shows and Movies like ‘Squid Game’ to Watch This Winter

Squid Game has become the most-watched TV show on Netflix, surpassing phenomenal TV shows like The Witcher, You, Sex Education, Stranger Things, and more. The show’s take on twisting children’s games for the survival of the fittest and highlighting the socio-economic imbalance in South Korea are just a few things that people love about the show. However, after binging all nine episodes, fans are left wanting more. While Netflix has not announced a season 2, viewers want similar movies and TV shows to fill this void despite the show ending on a sort of cliffhanger.

So, if you are looking for TV shows and movies like Squad Game to watch this winter, you are at the right place. While these movies and TV shows may be on Netflix, your access to them may vary depending on the geo-restrictions imposed by Netflix in your region. To remedy this, you will need a Netflix VPN, more on this later. That being said, let’s take a look at some fantastic TV shows and movies like Squad Game to binge on this winter.

Alice in Borderland

This TV show takes place on the empty streets of Tokyo, Japan. Alice in Borderland was made available for streaming at the end of 2020, revolving around a deadly survival game. This survival game is one that nobody wanted to play and is the worst kind imaginable. The TV show has twists and turns at every corner, featuring an obsessive gamer and his best friends contending against tigers, floods, samurai swords, and fire. This manga-adaption is dark, but it is sprinkled with light humor that feels just right.

Sweet Home

Sweet Home is another South Korean production that shares a lot with Squid Game. It has violence, deep relationships, and survival. The TV show centers on a group of individuals that lock themselves in their apartment when monsters start eliminating humanity. Once killed, people resurrect as monsters reflecting their innermost desires. With each individual having their own emotional baggage, the TV show can become quite tense,

3%

This show is Brazil’s first attempt at a Netflix Original, and the story focuses on a world divided into a poverty-stricken zone and the other the complete opposite. Upon turning 20, people from the poverty-stricken zone can become a part of a world with privileges. The process of elimination is intense, with only 3% of the people making it through. The show has five seasons, giving viewers more than enough content to sink their teeth into.

The Hunger Games

This blockbuster may seem silly to some, but it shares a lot with Squid Game if you think about it. If you have somehow missed out on this movie franchise, now is the time to watch it in one go.

The Hunger Games takes place in the future, where the world is divided into districts based on wealth. Two teens are sent from every district for a deathmatch, where only one can come out alive every year. The franchise is just as gory and violent as Squid Game, and it even deals in the same themes of poor vs. rich.

Escape Room

Escape Room is a thriller from 2019, where six strangers get mysterious invitations for an opportunity to win $100,000 if they participate in an escape room. The six strangers come from diversified backgrounds, and upon entering the complex discover the escape room has increasingly dangerous levels. Additionally, each escape room represents various disasters each individual has already survived, thus adding more mystery to an already exciting plot.

Battle Royale

A school trip turns deadly when children are kidnapped and taken to an uninhabited island to hunt and fight each other. The movie has everything from weapons to exploding collars and whatnot. Battle Royale is a cult classic and movie not to be missed.

You now have more than enough content to check out after binging on Squid Game. Rest assured, each movie/TV show will keep you on the edge of your seat. If you cannot watch a particular movie or TV show on Netflix or any other platform for that matter, you will need to use a VPN as mentioned above.

With a VPN for streaming, you can connect to VPN servers in different locations and thus access locally available content inaccessible to you. Furthermore, a VPN for streaming also eliminates ISP throttling, thus ensuring you never have to deal with stuttering or buffering issues ever again.
