What is Panchakarma?

Panchakarma is a Sanskrit word in which Panch means ‘five’ and Karma means ‘treatment’. Panchakarma removes the accumulated ama or toxins from the body through the process of five therapies- Vamana, Virechana, Nasya, Basti, and Rakthamoksha.

Preparatory Therapies for Panchakarma Treatment

Before the Panchkarma therapy, the masseurs perform preparatory therapies like Snehana (Oleation) and Swedana (Fomentation).

• In Snehana, herbal oil (external) or ghee (internal) is applied to the body that paves way for the treatment to reach deep tissues and loses the toxins.
• Followed by Swedana where the herbal steam bath or herbal oil infusion takes place to flush the loose toxins out from the body.

How to Perform these Preparatory Therapies?

Abhyanga- Massage with medicated herbal oil on the entire body or at any specific part.

Pizhichil- Warm herbal oil poured on the entire body accompanied by a soft hand massage.

Podikizhi- It is a Potli massage where special muslin cloth bags are made that are induced with medicinal herbs, rice, etc., and then the Potli is heated in warm oil and the same is used for the massage.

Kashayavasti- Herbal medicinal decoction made of rock salt, herbal oil, herbs, and honey, administered through the anal route for cleansing.

Nasyam- This one is conducted nasally, wherein the herbal nasal drops are administered through the nose.
Shirodhara- A thin stream of warm herbal oil is poured on the head and forehead region for 40-45 minutes during this therapy.

Panchakarma- The Five Treatments

1. Vamana

After giving the preparatory therapy for a few days, when the toxins loosen up and gather in the upper cavities of the body, then Vamana is performed. Vamana is a medicated induction of the vomiting where the decoction and emetic medicines are given to the patients with the Kapha condition.

2. Virechanam

Virechana or purgation therapy is performed to eliminate Pitta toxins from the body that is collected in the gallbladder and liver. The toxins are eliminated from the body and cleansed through the gastrointestinal tract completely.

3. Basti

Basti or enema or colonic irrigation is liable for cleansing the deepest toxins for harmonizing the doshas- Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. The therapy is considered best of all the Panchakarma treatments and is highly beneficial for curing several health conditions.

4. Nasya

Nasya therapy aims at cleaning the nose and head region where the Kapha toxins are accumulated. In the therapy, the medicated herbal oil is administered through the nostrils to treat various head-related issues.

5. Rakta Moksha

The therapy is performed to cleanse the blood and is performed occasionally and only on some patients after the recommendation of the Ayurveda therapist or doctor.
