The Circular Saw

The circular saw is made up of an abrasive blade or disc. It is used to cut different materials. The rotary motion of a circular saw helps in the process of cutting various materials. Many years ago, the circular saws were commonly used in the sawmills.

A circular saw is a tool that is used to cut wood, plastic, metal, etc. It is a portable device that can be used manually or with the help of a machine. The blades of the circular saw are designed specifically for different materials. For example, the blades for cutting woods are designed to make cuts. The circular saws which are mounted to a machine are powered by electricity, hydraulic motor or any other source.

The blades of the circular saw are circular in shape. They rotate in a clockwise direction with high speed. The blades can be slanted to various degrees as per the requirement.

The circular saws are considered power tools that are helpful in cutting materials accurately and quickly. They may be corded or cordless. The corded tools are more powerful than the cordless circular saws.

The circular saws are used for straight cuts. It can also be used for a mitre cut. The circular saws are considered ideal for cutting all types of sheetrock, plywood, framing materials and also for some smaller pieces of trim. It is also good for materials other than wood such as plastic or masonry material. This quality is achieved simply by switching the blades.

In order to cut 2×4, the use of jigsaw is common. But this practice is quite slow. On the other hand, the circular saw performs its duty at a much faster rate. It is louder and powerful as compared to the jigsaw. You should check the condition of the circular saw and the blade before cutting anything.

Any kind of damage in the circular saw can cause an uneven cut. The battery should be fully charged if you are using a cordless circular saw. Check the blade after removing the battery from the saw. You have to replace the blade of the saw in case you observe any kind of damage. Don’t set your blade too deep as it can result in kicking back. Little areas of the blade should be exposed in order to achieve the right cut. Hold your blade against 2×4 after unplugging the saw. The blade should be adjusted in such a way that its depth is about a quarter of an inch below the bottom of 2×4. The blade should be tightened up after achieving the right depth. You have to follow the basic carpentry techniques in order to start cutting. Switch off the circular saw immediately whenever the blade displaces itself and realign the direction. Using a speed square tool is beneficial in case of cross-cutting. Guide the circular saw against the speed square to achieve a straight cut. The same practice becomes more difficult when you use the jigsaw in place of the circular saw. You can master this technique after a few repetitions.

The kickback of the circular saw is a fact of life for anybody who uses it. It is caused by the timber that is being cut, bending in some type of way, so that it jams on the back of the blade, making the sawbuck or stall. You must understand the cause of kickback. This can help you in preventing it. You should not let the timber bind on the back of the blade. Choose the area to make an appropriate cut. Clampdown the timber if it wants to slide about on the stools. Use some smaller pieces to make a bench. Make a bench out of a couple of planks. The kickback of a circular saw is directly proportional to the injuries caused. Kickback is the term for wood that suddenly and without warning is propelled back towards the operator at a high rate of speed. The reason is the trauma from wood striking the head, chest or torso of the woodworker. The other reason is that the wood moving so quickly that an operator doesn’t have time to take the handoff of it and it gets pulled across the saw blades. There are some ways to reduce the risk of kickback. These ways are inexpensive and are nothing but common sense. The use of riving knife helps to prevent the wood from getting caught in the back of the saw if it drifts away from the fence. The splitter also provides the same function as that of the riving knife. Another way to prevent kickback is by using a crosscut sled. Always use a push stick instead of your hands to push the wood through the blade. Don’t let your guard down in order to prevent kickback.

The teeth of a circular blade should face such a direction so that the tips of the blade dig into the wood. This means that the blade should cut upwards at the front. This helps to maintain the control of the saw and the workpiece. Almost all circular saw blades would have arrow marked which would tell you the direction the blade should rotate. You will find different configurations available for these types of blades. There are different types of blades that are used for various purposes. There are the rip cut blades with few large teeth designed to notch into the wood on the forward stroke. Others are the cross-cut and combination saw blades, but despite different teeth configurations; they all face backward. Therefore, the blades of a circular saw should be fixed so that its teeth face the direction of spin. The metal cutting blades are toothless, however, they only feature expansion slots for when the blade heats up. There are also abrasive blades for the masonry that don’t have teeth but instead are made up of rough materials like fiber. Some top blades for wood cutting are- oshlun, concord, Dewalt, Freud. These are some of the names of the top brands for woodcutting.
