Toilet Installation: Steps to Remember Toilet Installation: Steps to Remember

install a toilet

Installing a toilet is a job that requires knowledge and experience. To make the installation leak and trouble free, here are a few steps to remember:

Step 1: Take Precise Measurements

Having a rough estimate of your old toilet will help you buy a new one. In order to make a reasonable guess, you need to take precise measurements. The waste pipe for the vast majority of toilets is placed approximately 12 inches from the wall. However, that does not apply to all toilets; there are a few models which have measurements ranging from 10 to 14 inches.

Here’s how you can take the measurements:

  1. Take a measuring tape
  2. Place one end to the wall
  3. Measure till the hold down bolts of the toilet

Taking these measurements makes it easy for you to shop for a toilet which will fit perfectly. Once you pick the perfect toilet for your house, the next step is to install it.

Step 2: Figure out which bolts to use

The right bolts will save you inconvenience. Brass bolts are the best: they have great resistance to rust/corrosion and can also be cut off easily later on. Metal toilet bolts leave a yellowish stain resembling zinc coating. This makes them look like brass so be sure to check the label. You might get misled by the yellowish coating, thinking they are brass. Checking the label will help you avoid this mistake.

Step 3: Gather all required tools

Installing a toilet is a technical job. You need several tools to get this job done. Here’s a list of everything you will require to make the installation hassle-free:

  • 4-in-1 screwdriver
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Level
  • Cordless drill
  • Hacksaw
  • Caulk gun
  • Locking pliers
  • Pliers
  • Utility knife
  • Shop vacuum
  • Slip joint pliers
  • Tape measure
  • Rags

Step 4: Avoid rocking with shims

You may have noticed that toilets begin to rock on an uneven floor which causes the wax ring seal to break and eventually leak. Therefore, checking for wobbles is important after setting the toilet in place. Make sure you don’t use regular steel washers as they can stain the floor. Plastic construction shims work fine but it is better to use plastic shims for the toilet.

Step 5: Tightly secure the nuts and shims

The next step after adding the shims is tightening the nuts and cutting off the shims. You also need to caulk around the base of the toilet. This will make it more secure. If you have vinyl flooring, keep in mind that the toilet can loosen as the vinyl compresses. An easy fix is to retighten the nuts every few days after the installation.

There can be more steps involved depending on the kind of toilet you wish to install. However, if you want your toilet to be installed properly, it is better to take a professional plumbing service.

An experienced plumber can add value to your home or workplace and offer quick and reliable services to their customers. If you are looking for a good plumber to install or repair your toilet in your house then always opt for a qualified and experienced plumber to install or repair a toilet without any damage or issue.
