What Is A Solar Panel? How Does It Work?

A solar pane, also known as a photovoltaic (PV) module, is an assembly of photovoltaic cells mounted in a framework for installation which can be used to generate electricity through the photovoltaic effect. The bunch of solar cells (or photovoltaic cells) usually made of silicon are connected together to make one solar panel. The efficiency of a Solar panel can be calculated by its MPP (maximum power point) value. It consists of MPP voltage (V MPP) and MPP current (I MPP). A good solar panel usually lasts for about 25-30 years.

Size: – Talking about its size, solar panels in Perth are about 65 inches by 39 inches or 5.4 feet by 3.25 feet, depending upon their manufacturing.

Purpose:- Solar panels generate their own power by using sun rays. They can greatly offset your monthly electricity bill, if not eliminate it.

Weight:- generally, the weight of the solar panels is about 40 pounds. For pitched roofs, solar systems add about 2.8 pounds per square foot. For flat roofs, they add about 5 pounds per square foot.

How Do Solar Panels Work?

Solar panel working can be easily understood by 5 easy steps.

STEP 1:  Sunlight activates the panels  and produces an electric field

Each solar panel is basically a sandwich made up of two slices of silicon which is a semi-conducting material. PV modules use wafer-based crystalline silicon cells or thin-film cells. They are usually rigid, but semi-flexible ones based on thin-film cells are also available.

To set up the working, photovoltaic cells need to establish an electric field. This electricity generated flows to the edge of the solar panel, and then into a conductive wire. This is then passed through an inverter to convert it into an AC current, which can then be transferred into the National Grid.

STEP 2. The electric field produces an electric current

The electric field is produced due to positive and negative layers of silicon. This electric field produced helps to make electrons un-bound and free. These free electrons are set in motion by an electric field which results in the production of electric current.

STEP 3. Conversion of electricity from dc to ac

The electric current generated by panels flows through a series of wires to an inverter. The conversion of DC current to AC current is possible with the help of this gadget, known as inverter thus making it accessible for everyday use.

STEP 4. Powering your house with the converted electricity.

Now the alternating current is ready to be distributed within your house with the help of an electrical panel, also called a breaker box. The electricity produced is now available to power lights, appliances, and other electrical devices.

STEP 5. Utility meter

The utility meter is a device that measures the flow of electricity from the grid to your home and vice versa. Any electricity that is not consumed via the electrical panel is sent to the utility grid by using the utility meter. When you are in need of more energy, this utility meter provides you with surplus energy stored in it, and When your solar energy system is producing more electricity than you need on your site, this meter actually runs backward.

The bottom line

Now as you are well-known about the steps your solar panel system needs to work. You can easily use it to give great relief to your pockets. Hence, Solar power in Perth is a major way to derive clean, pure energy from the sun. With the installation of solar panels on your home, you can help combat greenhouse gas emissions and reduce our collective dependence on fossil fuels.
