Which is the Best Plywood for Your Kitchen?

The words ‘best’ and ‘affordable’ do not normally go hand in hand because if you compromise the budget, the quality takes a hit. Luckily, when it comes to kitchen cabinets today, there are a number of options available in solid wood, plywood, veneer, PVC, and much more. However, before you use any of these materials, you need to keep in mind that your chosen surfacing needs to not only be aesthetic and functional but it needs to be resistant to heat and moisture as well as ensure daily wear and tear.

When it comes to plywood, this material is widely preferred and chosen due to its durability, convenience, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness. There are three types of plywood that can be used in making kitchen cabinets, drawers, and countertops, let’s explore them below.

MR-grade plywood

Also called commercial or water resistant plywood, this plywood is the most affordable and isresistant to water up to a certain degree, but note that it is not waterproof. This plywood works best in a kitchen area when you are planning a semi-modular kitchen and you intend to install kitchen drawers and cabinets which are not close to any water source, tap, or sink. This type of plywood can also work when you are remodeling your kitchen countertops and are looking for a cost-effective material. However, this is not the recommended plywood for your kitchen.

BWR plywood

Boiling water-resistant plywood is costlier than MR grade plywood but comparatively cheaper than marine-grade plywood. In terms of resistance to water/moisture, it is again not the best in terms of being water proof, however, it can resist water., it can be used in home interiors and kitchen areas in tropical areas but should still not be exposed to direct sources of water.

Marine-grade plywood

This plywood is the strongest among these other two plywood’s and has the highest resistance to water as compared to the rest. It is specially manufactured to resist damage when kept submerged in water for a long time and this is the reason why it is costlier as compared to the other plywood. Marine-grade ply can be used in areas where there is a lot of water from your bathroom to your kitchen areas. Although it is on the expensive side, this waterproof ply board is of high-quality, and investing in it will last you a long time. Being durable and tough it can last for years and doesn’t need to be regularly maintained and cleaned. This is the best choice to go for when building your kitchen.
